The Sorafurcia Lodge is an ancient gem brought back to life through skillful and sustainable restoration work, a treasure trove of charm and refined elegance set like a precious stone in a fairytale landscape dotted with peaks, meadows, woods and alpine lakes.
The story begins in the year 1452, when the Oberhof farmstead was built on the meadows above the village of Sorafurcia. Inhabited continuously for almost five centuries, it has seen generations of valle pusteria (Puster Valley) farmers come and go, honest, hard-working people living a heartfelt and sincere faith. Traces of their simple and peaceful lives can be found in the private chapel dating back to 1747 and in the traditional bread oven, both a few steps from the house and now restored.
The turning point came a hundred years ago, when the owners at the time decided to move to down to the valley, relegating the farmstead to the role of summer pasture only. Over the next fifty years, the surrounding meadows were populated by cows during the summer months. But in the end, the 15th-century house was abandoned to its fate.
However, the final chapter for the old farmhouse has not yet been written. Isolde, the sole heir, takes charge of it and, together with her husband Kurt, decides to renovate it during the recent years. After the usual process of obtaining permits, drawing up plans and carrying out the work, the Oberhof farmhouse is transformed into the refined Sorafurcia Lodge, which still retains its historic wooden stube and other architectural features that it has been possible to preserve.
A stay at Sorafurcia Lodge offers a myriad of leisure opportunities. Although skiing and hiking take centre stage, the Plan de Corones holiday area offers a wide range of sports, fun activities and places of cultural interest to visit.
Winter and snow, a winning combination
The Plan de Corones ski area boasts 31 lifts and 121 km of perfectly groomed slopes. In addition to long, easy and intermediate downhill runs, there are five particularly challenging black runs that will test even the most experienced skiers. The valley station of the Alpen Connecting cable car is located in only 1 km's distance from the Sorafurcia Lodge.
Cross-country skiers can take advantage of the services offered by the Nordic Arena in Dobbiaco, try their hand at the famous marathon trail or ski along the magnificent slopes of romantic side valleys such as Val di Braies, Val Casies and Valle di Anterselva, also known for biathlon.
Ski touring enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, with numerous ski tours of varying degrees of difficulty. Those who do not ski can enjoy pleasant walks in the snow or picturesque snowshoe hikes, ice skating and adrenaline-fuelled sledging.
A paradise for sports enthusiasts
Spring is the beginning of a long hiking season, continuing until the snow returns. Plan de Corones, the nature park Fanes-Sennes-Prags, Val Pusteria and the Dolomites offer an endless array of trails for all tastes and levels of difficulty. The steep Dolomite peaks in the area are an ideal training ground for mountaineers and climbers.
Cycling enthusiasts can climb up to the Furcia Pass from the Sorafurcia Lodge and descend to San Vigilio di Marebbe, try out the 18 mountain bike trails in the Kronplatz Bike Park or take it easy with the whole family along the flat cycle path of the Puster Valley.
The surroundings of Sorafurcia also have a lot to offer golfers, horse riders and paragliders: a beautiful 9-hole golf course a stone's throw from Brunico, a large riding stable in Valdaora from which to embark on magnificent outings in close contact with nature, and the summit of Plan de Corones from which to take a flight alone or in tandem with an experienced pilot.
Attractions and places of interest
The Puster Valley is famous for its lakes, surrounded by dense forests and splendid peaks. Lake Braies (Lago di Braies), Lake Anterselva, Lake Dobbiaco and Lake Landro are unforgettable places that are not to be missed.
In addition to the superb view of the Alps and Dolomites, the summit of Plan de Corones also stands out for two unusual museums: the Messner Mountain Museum, which tells the story of mountaineering, and LUMEN, a museum of mountain photography.
Those with artistic and cultural interests should not miss a walk through the historic centre of Brunico and a visit to the MMM Ripa, which focuses on the life of mountain peoples, in the town's medieval castle. Not far away, the ethnographic museum in Teodone is also a popular destination for children.
In all seasons, event enthusiasts are spoilt for choice between markets, street food, World Cup skiing, cross-country skiing and biathlon competitions, hot air balloon festivals, transhumance festivals and concerts. However, the most eagerly awaited event of the year is undoubtedly the famous Brunico Christmas market.
